The classic 78-card tarot system was designed by A.E. Waite and the iconic deck was gorgeously, meaningfully illustrated Patricia Coleman Smith and originally published in 1909. The lush symbolism of the cards draws on multiple mystical and spiritual traditions, and was heavily influenced by the 19th-century European occult movement; both creators were members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
